Having moved from Wisconsin to Illinois 20 years ago, I cherish visiting State Street, but the sadest day of my life was when I came in and was told that "Paul" had passed away while shoveling snow. I can't remember what his real name was, but we called him Paul, and if he saw me once a year, he acted like I was a regular. I know it was his gimmick, making all customers feel as if he remembered them, but every time he did it, I was convinced, just by the way his eyes lit up when I came in that he had been waiting for me to get there. I miss him and I miss the fun we had.

The fake tree only exists because the real one burned down a couple decades ago. Late in the evening the music gets cranked WAY too loud for an atmosphere that promotes conversation, but its a young casual-to-hip crowd with some regulars scattered in the mix. Oh, and wireless internet access works from the coffee shop next door (you subscribe through www.cafeconnection.com not the coffee shop).

Bar tenders are snobby. Act like they are better than you even though they are only bartenders!

If you are looking for an alternative on State Street, this is it. The atmosphere here is more laid back and is supported by a pretty decent tap selection. If you can get a spot on one of the couches, sit back, relax and enjoy your favorite pint.

This...is..a very cool place. Soft lighting, couches, neat bar, and a freakin' tree right in the middle. But what makes me stop in on occasion is the beer selection. Quite decent. Now they even have Red Seal on tap. If you want to take some visitor to a truly unique place in Madison, this is probably as unique as your going to get.

OK, so the fake tree (a cutaway portion of a full-sized oak tree) in the middle of the bar is a little weird, a little cheesy, and raises eyebrows. But once you get beyond that you find a relaxing place to hang out. It is replete with lounge-type couches along the back wall and low-sitting coffee tables. The tap selection is pretty good, about 15 beers on tap and some more in bottles. By your 3rd or 4th trip the bartenders will start to recognize you and chat a while with you if you're so inclined. That's pretty unusual for a place that has as many customers in a given week as Paul's Club. It definitely draws a younger crowd, most of whom look like they've only been legal for a year or so. Despite this, it is NOT a "drink til you puke your guts out and brawl at the drop of a hat" that you typically find in college towns--and Madison has its share of those places. No sir, this crowd, while young, is under control at all times. It's worth mentioning that they have one of the best juke box selections on all of State St. too. Nothing does the Paul's Club atmosphere more justice than choosing the Brand New Heavies from the juke box.

Cool lounge atmoshpere. Nice selection of beers. The tree thing in the middle of the bar makes it interesting in a beer garden sort of way.
